Abused, neglected and abandoned dogs are finding new homes thanks to the savvy social media skills of Perth’s Dogs’ Refuge Home.
Located in Shenton Park, it is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the rescue, care and re-homing of dogs.
Dogs’ Refuge Home’s Angela Egerton-Warburton says being non-profit they rely on social media to create interest.
“Social media allows, through shares and likes, for our dogs to appear on people’s news feeds.
“This means people who aren’t actively looking for dogs are still exposed to dogs looking for homes, which sometimes results in interest in a dog or even an adoption,” Ms Egerton-Warburton said.
Founded in 1935, they are one of the oldest animal welfare agencies in Australia and take in hundreds of dogs every year to find them new families.
Deborah and Peter Carlisle are considering adopting after a friend shared a picture of the dogs on Facebook.
“Deb shows me pictures of the dogs everyday, eventually we had to come have a look.
“All the dogs deserve a second chance, hopefully we can find one that’s going to be great with our young kids,” Mr Carlisle said.
Able to house up to 150 dogs, the Home’s no-kill policy ensures no dog will be euthanased for economic purposes.
Currently about 20 dogs are adopted every month, expected to grow to 30 by the start of summer.
