After being handpicked to compete in the Miss Burlesque Australia competition in Darwin later this month, Perth burlesque performer The Sugar Duchess has secured her entry after a successful fundraiser performance on Saturday night.
The performance, held at Connections nightclub, was a showcase of burlesque performers from across the city as well as students from The Sugar Blue Burlesque Academy and of course The Sugar Duchess herself.
“Burlesque is different to what many people think,” said The Sugar Duchess.
“Sure, there’s fishnets and corsets and the occasional Christina ballad, but there’s also fun and theatre and body positivity and feathers, so many feathers, and a great big community of support behind it.”
As well as travelling and performing all over the world, The Sugar Duchess is the manager of Sugar Blue Burlesque and teaches classes for the Academy.
“Owning the stage has very little to do with your size, age or background,” said The Sugar Duchess.
“Learning how to embrace your female or male figure, finding the things you love about yourself and putting your own mark on a performance is a big part of what our students take away from our classes.”
Cassee Lazic, 25, a student of The Sugar Blue Burlesque Academy who performed in the show on the weekend, said she joined burlesque to boost her body confidence.
“When you watch a girl with all those insecurities take her clothes off on stage sexily and not scantily or for sex or for money, it’s just such a beautiful experience to be a part of,” said Cassee.
“I love that we have literal audience events that celebrate and acknowledge that and it certainly makes me feel better about my body.”
After taking classes with The Sugar Duchess, Cassee is confident that she will kick sugary butt in the competition.
“The dance moves in her numbers are perfect and amazing and well thought out, if there’s judgment based on technique and choreography, and being a genuinely all around babe, she will be a clear candidate for first place!”
