Murdoch University’s Guild is running a food bank service for students who can’t afford to buy their own food.
The guild general manager Evan Battalis says the aim is to enhance the students’ experience.
“We deal with people who are struggling financially to get through their studies,” says Battalis.
“When students become vulnerable to difficult situations, they can change the course of their life by simply quitting their studies, and this can ruin their life paths.
“The guild help people stay with the course and finish their studies because once they get that degree, different doors open up in life and if you miss out because of financial difficulties that you are going through, it’s a shame,” he says.
Mayank Khanna is one Murdoch university student who has benefited from the food bank service. He says the guild made him feel like he has a family in Australia.
“Staying without your family can be tough, but the guild makes sure that students don’t go lonely,” says Khanna.
“I don’t have a job yet and sometimes, I run out of money which can be stressful, but the food services here are always like my next hope,” he says.uild officer Mark Tan says the guild is a second home for students.
“Different students have different needs, and we must support students in all angle,” he says.
