Despite the heavy downpour on Sunday in Perth, many Singaporeans braved the rain and were at the Singapore Community Day held at Matilda Bay Reserve.
This year’s event saw around 1000 Singaporeans as well as Australians indulging in Singapore’s local delicacies while enjoying the different performances and activities.
Overseas Singapore Liaison Ms Ng Guan Ing said the turnout had exceeded the organisers’ expectations regardless of the bad weather.
“It is fantastic to see people coming with the full Singaporean spirit for the food and also to support their fellow Singaporeans who are organising this event. The turnout was amazing,” Guan Ing said.
“This is a massive event on a huge scale. I am proud to say that everyone has worked equally hard to bring this all together despite each member having their own hectic schedules.”
People were seen enjoying local foods like satay, Singapore kueh, Teh Tarik, Ramly Burgers, laksa and even food from the Old Chang Kee stall.
A face-painting stall was set up especially for children of all ages. Coupled with some game booths and a lion dance performance towards the end of the event, everyone had something to look forward to.
Music performances by the Nightmoves were incredible entertainment under the rain.
“We just hope for the weather to be better the next time around,” said Mr Joachim Tan, Singapore Community Event Chairman.
“Seeing people turn up and having a great time was the best part of the event.”
The Singapore Western Australian Network (SWAN) and Overseas Singapore Unit (OSU) thanked their organisers and student volunteers for making the event a success.
