It has taken 10 years but finally Murdoch Tavern-goers can enjoy a bite along with their beer.
And it’s the Chicken Parmy with Chips that everyone’s talking about.
The university, in partnership with The Guild, introduced a kitchen in the tavern for the first time since it opened in 2007 and unveiled the renovation three weeks ago.
It includes new indoor and outdoor furniture, improved layout and decoration and a pub grub menu of 23 dishes, such as burgers, chips, pizza and the popular parmigiana, and daily $13 specials will be on offer for Murdoch students and staff.
Head chef Harrison Crook welcomed a “massive” crowd during opening week and tavern-goers had plenty to say about the parmy.
“Everyone was complaining about how the parmy goes on top of the chips and not on the side,” he laughed.
“So far, that is the biggest complaint we had.”
Psychology student Gabrielle, who has been working in the tavern for three years, told Bounce News the tavern is drawing more custom.
“We are definitely getting busier every now and then ever since the kitchen was opened,” she said.
“Our sales have also been increasing because we used to make $300 a day and now, at least $3000.”
Fellow worker Grace, an education student at Murdoch, added: “We are usually busy on Monday and Friday, and also during the study break. Also, we need three staff to be working instead of one.”
So what’s the verdict on the food?
I tucked into a chicken parmy and it was absolutely delightful. It’s fair to say it was one of the best chicken parmigianas I’ve had for ages.
The chicken was crispy, the cheese was plentiful and the chips had an edge. Definitely recommended.
